Say hello to our new columnist, Heather Cooper – Creator of Sash + Veil Bridal Accessories

Say hello to our new columnist,  Heather Cooper…..

Heather has been in the fashion business for over 15 years, having studied first at London College of Fashion where she specialised in Fashion Illustration and then continuing her studies at Ravensbourne where she graduated with a degree in Fashion and Textiles.

Heather has always been drawn towards surface decoration, “I was taught to crochet, sew and embroider at a very young age by my beloved grandmother, Violet. She was the one who first awakened my desire for beautiful fabrics when she used to regale me with tales of dances where the girls wore ball gowns of sumptuous silks and satins”.

In her final collection, before graduating her catwalk show featured models sweeping down the runway in oversized wool wraps embellished with swathes of chunky yarns in bold colours contrasting with diaphanous decaying organza wedding dresses embroidered in jewel coloured silk threads.

Since graduating, Heather has gained valuable experience mainly in London, choosing to work in the smaller studios where she would often work alongside high profile designers on couture commissions and luxury capsule collections.

It was, however, following a private commission last year to create a Midsummer Nights Dream themed veil wedding dress and veil that Heather decided she should take the leap and start creating for herself and Sash + Veil was born.

Heather now combines her love of exquisite materials, beads and trims with her passion for hand-beading and sewing, creating bridal sashes and belts, veils, headbands and garters which, after that special day, can then be treasured forever.

“I feel very fortunate to be able to work with the most beautiful fabrics and beads – I am obsessive about what I do and am always on the lookout for new materials and as a result of which, I do have a vast collection of both vintage and modern trimmings, beads and fabrics all squished into my tiny studio!”

“As for my spare time, I’m afraid I don’t anything radically different – when I’m not in the studio, I love trawling second hand shops and flea markets for interesting bits, always looking for something I can use in my work. Basically, my work encompasses my world – it is my obsession and my life but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Heather will be writing a regular column for Weddings Know-How starting from next week.
